Step Inside Greenhouse Books...

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Janet who, along with her son Jonathan, runs Greenhouse Books – an independent bookshop in Stockport. Read on to learn more about the books they’re home to and the events they have coming up…

How long have you been running Greenhouse Books?

Approximately four and a half years with one and a half years of that in the fantastic Underbanks area of Stockport.  Previously – myself and my son, Jonathan, who runs the shop on a daily basis – were in a small shop on a quiet arcade in Cheadle.

What do you most want people to know about the bookshop?

That we are an independent family-run bookstore and coffee shop offering new and pre-loved books with a personal and friendly service. We supply a whole range of books on a categorised system with a particularly big range of fantasy and sci-fi, literary fiction and art books. We also sell a curated supply of new books from our sister company, Confingo Publishing, as well as from other publishing houses.

Vinyls are a new addition to our service where customers can try a record on our sound system before purchase, while enjoying the cakes, coffee and tea with vegan options we offer, should they so wish.

We hold book launches, art talks and hire out the space for events. Upcoming author events are on 24 May at 6 p.m., with a professor of cinema and modern media doing a talk on how artists are using animation as a means of protest, and at 6 p.m. on 31 May where we will be hosting Katherine Bucknell who will be talking about her biography of Christopher Isherwood, author of Goodbye to Berlin, from which the film Cabaret was derived.

Why are bookshops still so special?

Because they are a door to a world of possibilities and pleasure. They are an escape from the status quo to something new, funny or challenging, which the digital world and its algorithms cannot always provide.

Where can people find you?

We can be found in a pedestrian area at 13 Great Underbank, Stockport, SK1 1LF. We’re opposite the beautiful black and white NatWest building, in the area people refer to as the ‘New Berlin’.
