Meet Amy, one of the amazing event hosts who will be looking after you at Singles Nights in Preston. She is a Psychology student with a particular interest in mental health, so looking after your wellbeing at events is very important to her!

Tell me a little more about your psychology degree…

I am currently in my second year of University at Salford studying Psychology, and it’s been an incredible journey so far. My favourite aspect of my course has been exploring the biological influences on behaviour. Understanding how our brains and bodies interact to shape our thoughts and actions is not only fascinating but also essential in grasping the complexities of human nature.

What would you like to specialise in?

I would like to specialise in clinical psychology. From a young age, I have always envisioned myself in a career where I am able to help people, and clinical psychology offers a profound opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives. My passion lies in supporting individuals who are battling with mental health conditions – whether it’s through getting them the correct diagnosis, medication or therapy.in

How can you use your background knowledge as an event host?

For many, the idea of attending events can be quite daunting. The prospect of meeting new people and stepping into unfamiliar social situations often triggers feelings of anxiety. It’s completely understandable – most of us have been there at some point!

As someone with a background in psychology, I’ve come to appreciate the nuances of social interactions and the emotions that come with them. This knowledge equips me to not only recognize when someone is feeling anxious but also to provide support in those moments.

When I notice an attendee who seems a bit overwhelmed, I’m able to step in and help calm their nerves. Whether it’s through a friendly conversation, a reassuring smile, or simply offering a few mindfulness techniques, my goal is to create a welcoming atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable.

Events should be (and are) enjoyable, and by using my understanding of psychology, I strive to ensure that every guest can focus on connecting with others and having a great time. Remember, you’re not alone in feeling anxious about social situations – together, we can transform that apprehension into confidence!

Do you have any top tips for people on how they can look after themselves / make the most of the event?

My number one tip for attending events is simple: be yourself! Embrace your authentic self and don’t feel pressure to conform to others expectations. This is the easiest way to connect with others who you can genuinely relate to or someone whom you share common interests with.

If you are feeling nervous to attend an event, remember that you are not alone. Everyone there is likely to be feeling a bit nervous too, as they all share the same goal of engaging and connecting. Keep in mind that any of the event hosts who are there are more than willing to support you with anything that you may need.

So take a deep breath, be yourself and step into the experience with an open heart. You never know who you might meet!
