In this interview, Emmy and RTS-nominated producer, Mel, from See You There Studios shares her journey from two decades at the BBC… to launching a unique mobile podcast and video production company focused on authentic storytelling, meaningful conversation and human connection.

Tell us a little more about your background in TV.

I’m an EMMY and RTS nominated Producer with more than 20 years’ experience creating content designed to entertain, educate and inspire audiences. Before founding my own production company earlier this year – See You There Studios – I spent two decades at the BBC producing an incredibly broad range of content across factual one-offs, fact-ent formats, kids and family, pre-school, animation, studio entertainment, education and development. Within this I’ve worked with some incredible teams including Blue Peter, BBC Children in Need, Newsround and CBeebies.

At the heart of everything I do is storytelling. Much of my career has involved interviewing people for television, and I’ve been fortunate enough to speak with everyone from Prince William to Olivia Dean. But if I’m honest, I’ve always been most passionate about telling the stories of real people. I’ve travelled the length and breadth of the country filming with families and contributors whose stories deserved to be heard.

No two days in television have ever looked the same. I’ve led teams of writers, composers, animators and commissioners on large-scale productions, produced location shoots from helicopters and speedboats, and directed filming in both New Zealand and Australia – including, at one point, filming on the set of Neighbours! It’s been an exciting, varied and hugely rewarding career.

What was the inspiration behind your production company, ‘See You There Studios’?

After more than 20 brilliant years at the BBC, I felt ready for a new challenge – one that allowed me to focus on the kind of storytelling that resonates with me most deeply.

As the industry evolves, with more production companies leaning into generative AI, prioritising commercial output and platforming talent based primarily on social reach, I wanted to return to something more human and meaningful: genuine conversation and authentic storytelling.

That thinking became the foundation for See You There Studios.

We built our company around a beautifully restored 1970s VW campervan transformed into a high-end mobile video and podcast studio. The idea was to create a relaxed, intimate “conversation bubble” – a space where people feel comfortable enough to open up and tell their stories naturally.

We wanted to offer something visually and emotionally different from the typical podcast studio setup. Softer, warmer, more personal. A creative environment that feels inviting and reflective of the people and brands we work with, while still delivering exceptional production quality.

What are you offering at the moment?

We currently offer our mobile video and podcast studio for fully serviced recordings, including production, engineering and editing. We bring the van directly to the client and create a professionally lit and rigged studio setup capable of recording up to four people.

The flexibility of the studio means we can record almost anywhere – festivals, live events, offices, shops, rural settings, urban locations, or even directly outside a contributor’s home if they’re unable to travel to a traditional studio.

Alongside podcast production, we also offer a highly popular branded content package for businesses. This can include:

  • “Meet the Team” interview series
  • Longer-form “In Conversation With…” podcast-style interviews with founders or CEOs
  • Promotional and social-first video content
  • Professional stills photography

Following the shoot, we provide full post-production and deliver a complete suite of professionally edited video and photography assets optimised for websites, LinkedIn, Instagram and wider social platforms.

My partner Paul is an exceptional sound engineer, music producer and podcast producer, and between us we’re able to offer a true end-to-end production service – from concept development through to final delivery.

What would you most like people to know about what you do?

I’d like people to know that we are good eggs! We genuinely care about the people we work with, the stories we tell, and the quality of what we create.

We bring a huge amount of professional experience to every project, but we also want clients to feel relaxed, supported and truly listened to throughout the process. Creating content can feel quite vulnerable at times, and we work hard to make people feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera.

Ultimately, we’re passionate about telling stories in a way that feels authentic, thoughtful and engaging – creating content that not only looks beautiful, but genuinely connects with people.
