*Jo has worked with students for multiple exam boards, but specialises in the AQA exam board.
Her specialist texts are Macbeth, Romeo & Juliet, A Christmas Carol, Frankenstein, Great Expectations, An Inspector Calls, Lord of the Flies and Blood Brothers.
Jo has worked in a number of schools locally, including Didsbury High School as a Literacy Specialist and Cheadle Hulme High School as an Intervention and Inclusion Specialist.
She has a masters in the Psychology of Education from the University of Manchester and her undergraduate degree is in International Relations and Comparative Literature from the University of St Andrews.
Outside of a school setting, she helped launch the Didsbury branch of Explore Learning, before going on to work in the BBC Bitesize team at Media City and at the National Citizen Service.
She has offered tuition locally for five years – primarily in a one on one role, but also offering small group support.
Finding the right tutor is often more about matching personalities and ways of learning than it is qualifications, however. For this reason, she recommends thinking of the first session as a bit of a one-off initially…
The first session will be a (relaxed!) assessment to see where your child is working at currently. They will not feel like they’re being assessed but we’ll try a variety of different activities together to gauge their understanding of different areas and any gaps we can fill together.
It’s also an opportunity to see if we’re a good fit. Finding the right tutor is very important – the academic side is really the minimum requirement – it’s just as important that they feel safe and comfortable during the lessons.
Therefore, part of the session will be getting to know one another as individuals – for example, any interests outside of the classroom. This can often be worked into tuition sessions to make them as enjoyable and engaging as possible.
It’s absolutely fine if you don’t feel like it’s the right match after the first session and, likewise, Jo will always be completely honest about whether or not she’s able to help going forward.
If you’re happy to go ahead after the first session, then we’ll decide on what option(s) are best for you:
Weekly or fortnightly sessions
At your home or Jo’s
1 hour or 90 minute lessons
Agree the same day and time each week / fortnight that sessions can be taken
Sessions will then continue at the agreed time for as long as you would like to. The lessons can be continued over the holidays, or you’re also welcome to take a break.
Jo will always let you know well in advance of any sessions she’s unable to make (with the exception of ill health, in which case she will let you know as soon as possible.)
Jo has worked with many neurodivergent students over the years, including dyslexic students and those with ASD, ADHD… and many more. Her masters in the Psychology of Education focused on this and she ran the inclusion unit at CHHS.
Please do let Jo know if your child has any special educational needs (there is space to do so on the form below) and, again, she will always be completely honest about if she is best suited to offer that support.
All the resources for sessions are included and Jo is also happy to provide extension activities to work on between lessons if requested.
Due to the need to get between lessons, Jo will not be able to provide extensive feedback after each session (although there will normally be time for a quick chat.)
She will also provide feedback each time an invoice is sent. This will include a quick
breakdown of what was covered in the sessions, areas to continue working on and details as to the progress made.
This can be shared with the school and, likewise, Jo is always open to communication with teachers.
After the first few sessions, Jo will also send over a personalised reading list. There really is no better way to ensure a child’s ongoing development – academically, but also just as individuals.
The first session is a one off payment to be paid by the day before.
After this, an invoice will be sent for four sessions at a time which is to be paid in advance. If a lesson is missed due to a holiday, then this will not be charged and it simply rolls over to the following week.
If a lesson was scheduled then there is a 48 hour cancellation policy. If you let Jo know at least two days before the session then you will not be charged; otherwise this will be counted as one of the four sessions.
You can get in touch at burton.road.network@gmail.com if you would like to make an initial enquiry / ask any questions. If you are ready to book a phone call to discover more then click the button below to leave your details and Jo will be in touch.
Outside of an education context, Jo has run events for many years and currently manages a local community events business which is all about connecting people in shared spaces.
This includes creative writing and guided journaling classes for adults.
She reads widely and, in recent years, has begun incorporating more non-fiction – although her heart will always be with stories.
She has always loved poetry (children’s poetry is right up there with the best!) and when people tell her they don’t like / understand it, she always recommends Wendy Cope.
On sunny days, work breaks are taken along the River Mersey and, on rainy days, she’ll be in the kitchen baking.
Jo is a firm believer that incorporating students natural interests into lessons will improve retention and make it a much more enjoyable experience for everyone.
